Warehouse identification and floor marking systems

Overview
Best Practices for Rack Label and Sign

Beyond the glitz and glamor, behind the towering casinos and bustling entertainment industry of Las Vegas lies a network of warehouses and distribution centers crucial to the city’s economy. Among these, the recent project of a third-party logistics specialist to a large U.S. retail brand stands out for its meticulous approach to warehouse organization and mobility.
ASG Services, a leading provider of rack labeling and warehouse signage plays a key role. Ensuring not only the implementation of visual cues for efficient day-to-day operations, but also the seamless integration of these systems within a busy new facility.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the intricacies and impact of rack label and sign installation in Las Vegas, Nevada, focusing on key strategies that ensured success for the third-party logistics company, the large U.S. retail brand, and the end consumer.
Warehouse signage and rack labels will be far more than simple identifiers applied to shelves. Instead, they will serve as essential operational tools. Identifying storage locations, directing traffic flow, improving efficiency, and promoting safety throughout the facility.
In this section, we will examine the key elements. Those that will transform labels and signage from basic visual markers into strategic components of an optimized warehouse operation. Moreover, effective facility marking and meticulous attention to detail will significantly enhance operational efficiency, supporting increased productivity, improved profitability, and a more positive customer experience. As a result, a well-designed signage and labeling system will become a critical asset in achieving long-term operational success.

The selection of durable and long-lasting materials will be essential for this warehouse environment. The labels and signs will be exposed to continuous challenges. Dust, temperature extremes, and potential physical impacts, make material performance a critical factor in long-term reliability.
Furthermore, understanding the warehouse’s unique operating conditions will be a key part of the selection process. For example, Las Vegas will present specific challenges due to its arid climate and occasional dust storms. As a result, products will need to withstand excessive dryness and temperature fluctuations while remaining easy to clean, maintain, and operate effectively over time.
Ultimately, ASG Services’ commitment to quality materials will ensure that the installed labels and signs will deliver consistent performance and durability, even under the most demanding conditions. Through careful material selection and attention to detail, the solution will support accurate identification and efficient warehouse operations.
Laminated polyester labels are an ideal solution.
Polyester is a stable material with a wide operating temperature, which means it doesn’t distort in high or low temperatures. Therefore, the barcode maintains scan verification performance.
A protective film shields the print face during wipe downs, and an unlimited design and full color production process is available.
Selected for the racks and shelves in Las Vegas, these labels will continue to be ASG Services’ most popular location-label product, supporting the evolving needs of the U.S. logistics and distribution industry.
ASG Services use expanded polyvinyl chloride board for their warehouse sign range for its durable, low-cost properties. This is a staple of the sign industry and used for their hanging barcode location signs and aisle marker placards.
Full color signs, with logos, location references and barcodes can be applied to this material which can then be formed into specific shapes, allowing for easy reading and scanning.
ASG Services produce external signs almost exclusively from aluminum composite material, a three-layer sandwich of polyethylene between aluminum. As well as being receptive to most production methods, it is also resilient to almost every weather and environmental fluctuation.
120 doors per side now have large 48″ x 48″ external dock door numbers proudly on display in true Vegas style. The internal dock doors are smaller of course but boast numeric and barcode information.
The use of high-contrast and highly visible colors significantly improves the readability from a distance, as well as easy level identification. Customers should consider this as a critical factor in facilities with high ceilings or extensive rack and shelving structures.

Precision in sign and label placement can make or break the efficacy of your system. A poor approach will lead to confusion and mistakes.
ASG’s installation teams will follow a methodical approach to ensure consistent label placement on beams and precise location positioning throughout the facility. Every location has accurate identification, verified, and prepared for a successful go-live.
During the pre-planning phase, digitally generated designs for each product will be developed and customized to specification. These designs will be tailored to the client’s rack system layout, incorporating wire deck configurations, totem labels on rack legs, and color-coded aisleways.
The customer will utilize color schemes and alphanumeric identifiers to organize bulk storage areas and rack levels. All designs and location data will be carefully coordinated and aligned to ensure accuracy and consistency throughout the facility. As a result, the labeling system will support efficient navigation, accurate location identification, improved workflow, and enhanced operational efficiency.
Linear and 2D barcodes as well as RFID tags are industry standards for inventory management. Therefore, the integration of these technologies into the signage and labeling strategy is critical.
The project in Las Vegas included the installation of linear barcode labels at key points on the racks and hanging signs for scanning. Linear barcodes are the most common type, and work better for long-range scanning, with barcode signs installed high in the ceiling space and rack labels on high breams.
We consider the project budget at this point. To help optimize costs, ASG apply standard print barcodes to signs within normal scan range, while higher-cost reflective materials will create barcode labels on signs for long-range scanning requirements.
ASG Services’ production capabilities incorporate customer branding to signage products, providing additional value for third-party logistics providers and their customers. Furthermore, branded signage will strengthen customer relationships, enhance brand visibility, and create a more professional and unified operational environment.

Work area coordination and flexibility are important factors to consider, in new build and existing distribution centers.
Managing a large-scale label and sign installation project across the US requires meticulous planning, communication, and a thorough information share exercise. From the beginning, key customer personnel are involved. Implementation teams, IT and the ongoing operation leads are encouraged to contribute to solutions, since each group has their individual requirements.
All are budget conscious, but each needs to be considered.
ASG’s project team focuses heavily on aspects ensuring customer understanding, product solution, while also orchestrating installation timing schedules, and performance elements. A unique aspect of this project was the climate. Work processes were streamlined to avoid risks of working in the Mojave Desert heat.
A well-coordinated plan is indispensable, but so is the ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. ASG Services exhibited both qualities, working around other trades and construction elements to minimize downtime and eliminate conflicts.
Hanging 5,200 barcode signs at twenty-five feet high, along hundreds of feet of storage aisles can be fraught with obstacles. This new building was typical, with electricians, systems integration personnel, rack builders, conveyor teams, dock door installers, as well as materials scattered randomly throughout. ASG’s team needed to make sure their work areas were clear ahead of time to ensure swift progress.
Flexibility enables them to modify installation sequences when changes to the building schedule occurred, ensuring the installation stayed on track and customer deadlines were met.

The effectiveness of labeling and signage strategy is not fully realized until after implementation. Post-installation adjustments and operations play a critical role in the signage system’s overall value.
A shelf or rack structure is an impressive sight, it’s new, shiny, and waiting for pallets. Pallet racking becomes effective, when locations are marked with references. A logical naming convention provides location reference. ASG Services apply those references with 67,500 polyester rack labels, 356,000 shelf labels at this Las Vegas project.
These many labels take a considerable amount of scrutinization, and phased application. ASG will therefore break the workload into scalable volumes that will be manageable and suitable for customer approval prior to release. This will enable customers to begin loading products in earnest.
We offer a minimum standard of performance to customers, ensuring our benchmark performance in every warehouse label installation. We use quality check procedures in all projects and upon completion.
ASG Services can provide ongoing evaluation and maintenance package projects. This is a separate service to discuss. The company keeps all documents, designs, and location references in its archive. It can also create programs to assist.
Damage can still happen to labels and signs, no matter how strong ASG makes them. But ASG will ensure the production of replacements on time. You do not need any design proofs. Pricing matches project levels, so turnaround is quick. This helps customers get replacements without delays or extra costs. This helps to maintain their locations’ activity and operational efficiency.
The company worked with the client to create a maintenance plan. This plan will ensure their signage and labeling system operates without issues. It provides periodic checks and maintenance as part of the project’s implementation.
Ultimately, the completion of the rack label and sign installation will represent far more than the successful implementation of a visual identification system. Rather, it will reflect meticulous planning, precise execution, and a strong commitment to the customer’s success.
Furthermore, the project will be completed one week ahead of schedule, driven by the racking teams’ accelerated progress and early completion of their installation activities. In response, ASG’s team will adapt its deployment strategy to align with the evolving project timeline.
As a result, the customer will gain additional time to test the new facility. They will validate operational processes, and initiate go-live activities with greater confidence and flexibility. Consequently, the project will not only achieve its installation objectives but will also support a smoother and more successful operational transition.
The labels and signs will enable the warehouse staff to identify locations quickly and accurately, reducing picking errors and streamlining operations, and are a foundation component in any logistics and distribution facility.
