Magnetic label holders attach directly to the steel face of pallet rack beams, shelving uprights, and metal bins. No drilling, no adhesive, no permanent commitment. The magnet holds the profile securely with a label inserted, and the holder can be repositioned or removed entirely when a location changes.
This makes magnetic holders the preferred option for distribution centers that frequently reconfigure storage layouts, or where applying anything permanently to the rack face is not permitted. Blank ticket inserts are included with most magnetic holder orders; perforated sheets are available if you need to print and insert your own barcode labels.

Adhesive label holders are the most widely used option across warehouse and industrial environments. They apply directly to the beam face or shelf edge using a permanent or removable adhesive backing. The profile sits close to the surface, which reduces the risk of impact damage from passing equipment.
Standard profiles are flat and low-profile. Angled versions are available where the label needs to be tilted for easier scanning at height or below eye level. Most adhesive holders are plastic and accept standard barcode label inserts. Removable adhesive options are available for installations where surface protection is required.
Clip-on holders are designed for surfaces where adhesive or magnets are not practical. They clip directly onto shelf edges, wire shelving panels, storage cages, perforated tube structures, and similar profiles. Because they wrap around the structure rather than sitting on the face, clip-on holders generally hold more firmly than adhesive options.
They are commonly specified in retail stockrooms, manufacturing pick areas, and anywhere wire shelving or open-frame racking is in use.
Hook and loop holders combine a durable plastic profile with a hook and loop backing strip. They provide a more robust movable option than either adhesive or magnetic holders — the holder stays securely in place under normal warehouse conditions but can be repositioned without tools when layouts change. Particularly suited to temporary storage systems and environments where the rack surface is non-ferrous and permanent adhesive is not permitted.
Application
Pallet rack labels in high-throughput distribution centers see constant changes as SKUs move in and out. Magnetic label holders are a strong fit because they can be repositioned without tools or adhesive residue. Adhesive holders are the better choice on permanent rack systems where locations rarely change, the flat profile protects against forklift impact and the insert can still be swapped quickly when needed. On lower-level shelving and pick faces within the same facility, shelf label holders serve the same function; same insert system, narrower profile.
For multi-level racking, label height selection is important: barcode labels need to sit at scanner height for each level. ASG can advise on profile selection to ensure inserts sit correctly at the required scan angle.
Clear location identification throughout storage facilities is also a core element of warehouse safety. OSHA’s warehousing guidelines recommend defined storage location marking as part of a safe and organized work environment.
Wire shelving is standard in retail back-of-house environments, making clip-on holders the default specification. They attach without surface preparation and can be moved when shelf configurations change during store resets. For retail environments using steel gondola shelving, magnetic or adhesive holders on the shelf edge are the standard choice.
Document wallets and larger-format holders are used in stockrooms to display pick notices, closed location signs, and product images.
Bin and component labeling in manufacturing environments typically uses adhesive or magnetic holders on steel shelving and flow racks. Frequent part number changes make the easy-insert design practical, operators can update labels at the point of use without tools or specialist equipment.
Hook and loop holders are used in environments where the structure is non-ferrous and adhesive is not permitted. The Material Handling Institute (MHI) provides industry guidance on storage identification standards applicable to manufacturing environments.

Most label holders are supplied with blank ticket inserts suitable for handwriting or printing. Where barcode scanning is required, inserts must be sized correctly to fit the holder profile and positioned so the barcode reads reliably at the required distance and angle.

Pre-printed inserts are available in standard sizes; custom layouts are produced where the barcode format, text content, or label size differs from stock. For operations following GS1 US barcode standards, including GS1-128 logistics labels, inserts are produced to the correct symbology specification to maintain scan reliability across fixed and handheld readers.
